Manaslu Trekking

Manaslu Trekking is back now.

After almost three months thanks to the hard work of local people and Rescue Committee it is good news for us to hear that the obstructed Manaslu region has been opened for the Tourists. There has been only 2 routes effected from the earthquake Langtang and Manaslu.
Now the good news Manaslu is back. Not only the foreign Tourists, this pristine and Beauty of Gorkha is equally an attraction for the internal Tourism industry. The trekking route was brought into operation after the removal of the landslide debris from Aarught to Philim of Sirdibas VDC. The Nepalese Army Bhairabi Dal Battalion, Gorkha, and the Armed Police Force’s Gorkha Company cleared the rubble and brought the route into use.
The District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee had deployed the Nepalese Army and the Armed Police for the same. It took around one month to resume the trekking route. This will give a message that our mountains are ready to make a Tour in the Autumn Season.
Short Descriptions
Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world at 8,163 metres (26,781 ft) above sea level. It is located in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas, in the west-central part of Nepal. Its name, which means "mountain of the spirit", comes from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning "intellect" or "soul". Manaslu was first climbed on May 9, 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition.
Manaslu at 8,156 metres (26,759 ft) above mean sea level, is the highest peak in the Lamjung District and is located about forty miles east of Annapurna. The mountain's long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions, and culminate in a peak that towers steeply above its surrounding landscape, and is a dominant feature when viewed from afar.
The Manaslu region offers a variety of trekking options. The popular Manaslu trekking route of 177 kilometres (110 mi), skirts the Manaslu massif over the pass down to Annapurna. The Nepalese Government only permitted trekking of this circuit in 1991. The trekking trail follows an ancient salt-trading route along the Budhi Gandaki river. En route, 10 peaks over 6,500 metres (21,300 ft) are visible, including a few over 7,000 metres (23,000 ft). The highest point reached along the trek route is the Larkya La at an elevation of 5,106 metres (16,752 ft).

Manaslu Conservation Area has been established with the primary objective of achieving conservation and sustainable management of the delimited area, which includes Manaslu.

Trekking Routes Nepal: Present status

Annapurna Conservation Area

About two-thirds of all trekkers in Nepal visit the Annapurna region. The area is easily accessible, guest houses in the hills are plentiful, and the treks here offer incredibly diverse scenery, with both high mountains and lowland villages. See the pictures below to know how beautiful place it is.

After Earthquake Annapurna region
Very little damage has been reported in this area, which includes the treks: Annapurna Circuit, Poon Hill and the Annapurna Sanctuary. These areas have been assessed on foot and via aerial inspection, with all 30 bridges in the area structurally sound and only 3% of buildings damaged. The inspection covered 30 villages in the region. Reconstruction on damaged buildings has already begun and will be re-assessed post monsoon in the autumn. Trails have seen extremely little disruption or damage from the earthquakes.
These routes are open and will be ready for the 2015 trekking season.

Everest Region

With Experience Nepal Treks & Expeditions you can marvel at the beauty of the world’s highest Sagarmatha National Park in the shadow of the highest peaks neighboring Mt. Everest and climb the panoramic view point at Kalapatthar where you will be surrounded with a breathtaking view of 360 degrees. The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the popular trekking destinations in the Khumbu region. This is an amazing hiking trip offering a marvelous grand journey. Everest base camp hiking takes place in the midst of rich old Buddhist culture and traditions with the warm hospitality of the highlanders, the Sherpa tribe. This splendid & awesome adventure begins with a sweeping scenic short flight of Lukla, the gateway to Everest, continues with a walk to Khumbu Sherpa capital at Namche Bazaar. It is famous for Tengboche Monastery and the unmatched view point of Kalapatthar (5,545 m) and the exciting Everest Base Camp with extraordinary viewpoints of pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Lho-la peak, Nuptse, Everest, Lhotse, Ama damlam, Thamserku, Tawache and the remorseless Khumbu icefall and its glacier.

After Earthquake Everest region
This region includes the Everest Basecamp Trek. The overriding response by international experts has been positive – that for trekkers you will see very little in the way of damage along the Everest Base Camp Trail. Assessment of this region was completed on foot and via aerial inspection, covering 15 villages (beginning in Lukla) and over 700 buildings. The summarisation of the assessment concluded that the region has sustained very little in the way of trail damage and 83% of buildings have been given a positive report. The vast majority of other buildings (teahouses, residential and commercial) should be easy to repair, with re-construction in process. Further assessment will need to be done on other routes within the Khumbu/Everest region, post monsoon in the autumn.
The iconic and classic Everest Base Camp brings you to the base of the highest mountain on earth. A worthy itinerary on any trekker’s wish list.

Manaslu Circuit

It is the fascinating adventure beginning from the warm area of Arughat Bazaar situated in the Nepal mid-west. Around Manaslu & Larke la treks follows Budhigandaki River upstream all the way for its source of Larke phedi via the warm sub-tropical mediterranean alpine to the dry arctic climatic zone, this is certainly a fabulous journey with an opportunity visiting the age of old Tibetan origin religion and culture preserved hundreds of years in the shade of Mt. Manaslu, world’s 09th highest with views of Ngadi Chuli, Himalchuli and Baudha Himal & Ganesh Himal (Yangra) towards east and Mt. Annapurna towards west. This fabulous area is protected from Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) since 1998, as this area is rich in flora and fauna with ancient culture and it is close to Tibet border as well. Manaslu region located in central Nepal has opened up travelers in 1991 but the Mountain itself had been open earlier for mountaineering expeditions.

The Manaslu Circuit begins in the Ghurkha District and the trail follows a spectacular route around the world’s eight highest mountain. It is also possible to trek into the Tsum Valley as an extension to the Manaslu Circuit and to trek to Manaslu Base Camp.
There has been fairly extensive damage to the eastern portion of the route, essentially the first 40km of trail. The primary source of damage has been from landslides lining the route that follows the Buri Gandaki valley.
Currently a team are working together to clear this section and to re-route it. This will also include the building of two bridges – construction of which is not due to be completed until November (though this may be earlier).
There has been some rock fall on the Larkya La (pass), the high point of the trek, though the village of Samdo, preceding the pass and the villages on the western slopes of the Larkya La are reported to be in good, usable condition.
A team is in the process of assessing the structural damage of teahouses and buildings. The primary point for trekkers to be aware of is the completion of the bridges on the initial part of the trek. This will determine when the route will be officially re-opened. There may also be limited, if any accommodation available on the first 2-4 days of the trek and trekkers will have to be prepared to be self-sufficient and consider a tented expedition, rather than staying in teahouses.
By all accounts we believe that the Manaslu Circuit will be suitable for trekking in November and confident that at the very latest by March 2016, the region will be fully operational. The Manaslu Circuit is one of the finest treks in the Himalaya and not to be missed.
